Sotheby's September Sale
Wednesday September 11th 1996, new Bond Street London

Serena Sutcliffe MW, head of Sotheby's International Wine department told us that this is to be "the largest and best London sale that we have had since the department was founded 26 years ago." One of the major excitements will be a complete set of Methuselahs (8 bottles in one!) of all the wines made by the prestige Burdgundian house of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in the wonderful 1989 vintage. But you'll need around Stg 60K to become the successful bidder!

There will be some stunning clarets from the great 1982 vintage including 45 cases of Chateau Latour, 14 of Lafite and six of Mouton Rotschild. The current favourite will be there in the guise of Le Pin, with magnums and bottles of '82 estimated to fetch up to Stg 20K a case!

For those who like a dreamy old sweetie, one of the very greatest vintages of Yquem, the 1865, is another star in this dazzling sale. "The 1865 remains one of the great tasting memories of my life, a seemingly eternal wine with total harmony and an all enveloping beauty that creates silence around the table. Any chance to acquire this wine from an impeccable source should not be missed by anyone seeking nirvana in a bottle" - Ms Sutcliffe expects the single bottle of the 1865 to go for up to Stg 6000.
