C fireworks Moscow's acclaimed Pushkin Café
comes to The Lanesborough

A "Chef-over" is the term used in the restaurant world to denote a visit, usually for a week, by an internationally renowned chef. The Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner has long been one of the leaders in such programmes - I remember vividly a visit by the famous Mr Charlie Trotter of Chicago. Last February I was all agog with excitement when Boujemaa Mars of La Mamounia visited from Marrakech. He brought with him a vast entourage of cooks and many packing cases of Moroccan batterie de cuisine and special ingredients were flown in.

This October it's the turn of Moscow's most celebrated restaurant - The Pushkin Café - presenting exquisite traditional dishes, exceptional vodka, the very best caviar and a classical Russian music ensemble from the 4th – 9th October.

Voted Russia’s Best Restaurant and famed for its 18th and 19th Century Russian style of cuisine, the Pushkin Café is housed in one of Moscow’s most prominent buildings dating back to the Pushkin era. Today, maintaining its historic grandeur, the restaurant is arranged over three floors housing over 15,000 genuine books and historic artefacts. It has been a cultural and culinary haven for the historian and the style conscious alike. Since its opening in 1999, the celebrated restaurant has become a destination for every celebrity, VIP and notary who visits Moscow including Bill Clinton, Sophie Marceau and Quentin Tarantino.

Pushkin Café’s acclaimed Head Chef, Andrei Makhov, will create mouth-watering dishes according to ancient recipies including ‘Pozharsky Cutlets’ (an innovative chicken dish invented by an inspired innkeeper) and the signature ‘Olivier Salad’ (which pays homage to the secret ingredients, originally created by the famous Hermitage restaurant in Moscow in the 19th Century). Alongside these historical delicacies will sit other traditional Russian fayre including ‘Sturgeon, Moscow Style’, ‘Pojarski’ and ‘Stroganoff à la Pushkin’ and spectacular Caviar based specialities. Continuing the Russian theme, The Library Bar has joined forces with premium vodka brand Stolichnaya to offer an exclusive menu selection of supreme vodkas including ‘Stolichnaya Elite’ accompanied by Russian Caviar.

Andrei Makhov will be cooking with The Lanesborough's Executive Chef, Paul Gayler, at The Conservatory from 4th - 9th October 2004. The restaurant, pictured left, is strikingly decorated in Gothick Brighton Pavilion style complete with exotic palms. The Conservatory provides a glamorous backdrop to this spectacular culinary event.

Lunch and dinner menus will be available.
