The UK based Restaurant, Hotel and Wine Review
Here's what they have to say about themselves:
Fish
finger sandwiches, bottles of Babycham, toad in the hole and snowball cocktails
are all on the menu of a brand new lounge bar and restaurant destined to revive
retro whilst acknowledging comfort is cool.
The
Langley on Langley Street in the heart of Covent Garden, with its classic yet
contemporary decor, ‘favourite and familiar foods’ menu, ‘now and then’
cocktails, groovy sounds and lam late licence is truly an individual bar
restaurant.
Cocktails
cater for revivalists and modernists with equal aplomb. The former will have
fun, whether refamiliarising or a first time trier, with classics such as the
Snowball, Pina Colada, Singapore Sling and Screwdriver - all served with the ubiquitous paper umbrella and ‘over the top’ fruit
garnish. Modernists on the other hand will be content with contemporary
concoctions induding the Neapolitan, Kurant Margarita or Cosmopolitan.
Join
the Langley’s campaign to bring back Babycham. As the only bar in the capital
to stock this fruity fizz and their fabulously kitsch glasses, we guarantee to
convert you. Check out The Langley’s take on the Kir Royale - Babycham with a dash of creme de cassis.
Food
continues in the same vein in both the bar and restaurant. ‘Grazers’ will welcome
The Langley’s unique bar menu packed with all the nation’s favourites and ‘back
to basic’ dishes - think cheese and
pickle sandwiches; scampi and chips, home-made pork scratchings; battered
saveloys and crumpets with butter and syrup.
Those
looking for a more formal food setting, should head for the 100 cover
restaurant where you will be spoilt for choice. The menu has something to suit
all tastes with a wide selection of all-time greats that have stood the test of
time. Choices include coq-au-vin; chicken and mushroom pie; toad in the hole;
macaroni cheese; beef Wellington, corned beef fritters and grilled kippers with
brown bread. A daily-changing fresh catch of the day features choices that may
include whole grilled sea bass, swordfish or Dover sole. Desserts take you back
to grandma’s kitchen with sticky toffee pudding and sherry trifle whilst the
chocolate sponge with chocolate custard and rice pudding with strawberry jam
will have you remembering those supposed ‘best days of your life.’
On
the site of the former underground network which ran to Covent Garden’s old
flower market, The Langley makes use of its original tunnels, vaults, nooks and
crannies to create a stimulating and interesting environment which is a
stunning mix of the modern with splashes of colourful art deco.
Descend
through the impressive entrance, down the sweeping stairs and find yourself in
the lounge bar where the old contrasts with the new. Perforated stone screens
and the original brick work contrasts with the bar’s various living rooms. Each
‘room’ in a different ‘sugar almond’ colour comes complete with individual rug,
wenge tables and leather sofas to provide a comfortable and stylish retreat for
cocktails and chats.
The main bar with its funky and psychedelic striped ‘snug’,
numerous bar stools and DJ booth offers a more upbeat vibe. Book one of the
raised cream leather ‘voyeur’ booths overlooking the main bar for to see and be
seen. Contrasting with the cool colours and classic lines of the bars and
restaurant, the Langley’s vaults with chocolate brown sofas, low tables, smoked
glass mirrors and deep tangerine lighting make for a stylish and warm setting
for intimate lounge soirees.
Music, courtesy of our house DJs, is an amphonic
library of themes and incidental music taking you on a journey through the
decades from Sergio Mendes and the Walker Brothers through to Prince and the
Blow Monkeys right up to now with Macy Gray, Air and Groove Armada.
The Langley’s tongue in cheek take on the London
lounge scene is destined to appeal whether you’re into retro and lounging;
grazing and great sounds or cocktail culture and comfort food.
