The UK based Restaurant, Hotel and Wine Review

The Provence Restaurant at
The Gordleton Mill - not another hiccup!!

Gordleton Mill The Provence Restaurant at the Gordleton Mill has long been one of our favourites having originally been put on the map by Jean-Christophe Novelli who won his first Michelin star there.

Last year (1999), an entirely new, young and talented team was recruited. The new Head Chef was Alan Dann from Lower Slaughter Manor in the Cotswolds where he achieved a number of prestigious awards including 3 AA Rosettes, 2 Egon Ronay Stars and that coveted Michelin Star.

We gave it a very good review.

Stop Press: 5th Jan 2000

We've just heard (see email below) that the restaurant has been closed (yet again!) and has changed into an "English Restaurant" whatever that may mean.

Let's hope it means carefully selected fresh produce, lots of local caught fish and game, lovely puddings, super English cheeses and no short cuts in the cooking!

Place your bets...

Dear Mr. Mould,

Having read your excellent review of Gordleton Mill, near Lymington, my wife
and I decided to pay a visit in late November. However, upon trying to book
I was informed that the restaurant was closed for two weeks and would be
reopening under new management, offering "English food." Needless to say,
we decided to eat elsewhere. This establishment has a troubled past and it
was sad to learn that the talented team in your review did not fare any
better than many of its predecessors.

I hope that this letter will prevent your readers from visiting the
restaurant under the impression that your review is still appropriate.

Incidentally, as our alternative we chose to eat at Gidleigh Park which we
found to be truly superb and well worth the long trek. The food was as good
as any we have experienced and Raymond Blanc's influence upon Michael Caines
was very apparent.

Yours Faithfully,

Robert Chambers, 5th Jan 2000
