the UK based Restaurant and Hotel Review
With our American guests still in tow, we made an impromptu lunchtime visit to The Pheasant at Kelling. It's high on a hill - yes there are hills on the North Norfolk coast, lying above the coast road, surrounded by its attractive gardens.
We arrived rather early and waited for service in the lounge bar longer than we would have wished. The attractive setting compensated in part for this and also the charming demeanour of the lady who eventually served us. The ladies each enjoyed a glass of the white house wine, cool, but not so cold (as can often be the case) to detract from the nose and flavour of the wine. Bob and I went for the local - well, Suffolk - Adnams beer and this also was served at just the right temperature. To have fresh well kept Adnams is yet another reason for coming to East Anglia !
The bar lunch menu was quite extensive but Ann, M.J. and Bob could not resist the fresh crab salad. We learned that the reason for the earlier delay was because the crab had not arrived from Cromer and the staff were making strenuous efforts to collect it! It was worth the wait and one could almost taste the freshness emanating from this well prepared dish.
I felt like having a hot dish and was intrigued by the description of the Pasta Neapolitan. It lived up to the waitress's recommendation and I could not help feeling I might have been in Naples, if it hadn't been for the hot Norfolk sunshine, and the Adnams.
For pudding our unanimous choice was the lemon meringue pie. It had just the right mixture of sweetness and tartness. We were unable to meet the chef but Bob said he wished he could take him back to Alabama! Coffee followed and this was available for guests to serve themselves. What a great idea. We each poured the coffee to our own preferences and it was good. The bill came to just over £45.00 for two courses, coffee and drinks. Very reasonable. We would go there again.
