Apparently they hold special wine/gourmet dinners there once a month, and have a mailing list of Friends so they can be kept informed about what's coming up. They're closed on Mondays, and it gets very busy Thurs/Fri/Saturday, so good idea to book first - 0161 432 7272. Well worth the trip out of Manchester.
Cherry Alder, Didsbury, Manchester
Look into the Olive Branch in Clipsham, Rutland. Excellent food, excellent value. Chef/Partner was no 2 at Hambleton Hall before going off on his own.

We recently visited a new restaurant, (which opened at the end of November 1999), called Franklins, at 157 Lordship Lane, London SE22. The food was both unusual and excellent. The portions were substantial and very good value.
It happens to be almost opposite the site of Nico Landenis’ first restaurant in London, which we used to patronise fairly regularly, and while Franklins is not perhaps quite up to Landenis' exalted standards, is in every other way a worthy addition to the gastronomic scene in East Dulwich.

Dear Dine Online,
As a committed foodie and frequent London restaurant sampler, I cannot recommend more highly a Chinese Restaurant in Chiswick called "Eat Well" Tel: 0181 748 6887.
The food is DELICIOUS, fresh and delicately cooked without the usual chemical aftertaste so often experienced in other Chinese eateries. Most imporatntly, the service is quick, extremely friendly and the manager takes great trouble to meet and greet all clients - a rare priviledge in this increasingly impersonal city we live in.
Have other people also mentioned anything about this restaurant?

My husband and I had a excellent meal at Restaurant Diment in Kenilworth. I would suggest that this appears on your directory.
I was given a business card and I saw that they have a website
www.birmingham.co.uk/diment.
We will be going back, this time with some friends.

Greetings, and thanks for a great site.
Out here in the wilds of Essex, I've found a couple of local restaurants, one English, and one Indian, both with websites... you might wish to cosider them for inclusion in your guide.
They're Izzy's Ruchita
www.ruchita.co.uk and
The Lodge Country Inn www.lodge-inn.co.uk
- both websites include comprehensive menus.
The lodge is slightly out of town and even provide a minibus at weekends to discourage drivers!
Cheers, and keep up the good work - Bob Massey - 31st Jan 2000

The food was reasonably priced and the presentation was excellent. it was a busy night and the chef April, coped extremely well keeping the standard of the food high. I recommend this restaurant and will visit again. April Victoria Jones February 2000Hi
Found a cracking little pub just outside of Aylesbury, the White Horse Inn at Whitchurch. The steaks were out of this world, with a wide variety of choice on the menu - all homemade grub.
Well worth giving it a go.

[We've had good reports about this one before! Editor]
The Pepper Box Inn Windmill Hill Fairbourne Heath NR Harrietsham Kent Whilst looking for somewhere new to eat in our area, I could not help but notice that you and no reviews of any Kentish pubs. I hope to put that right with a mention for the Pepper Box. We have visited this pub on numerous occasions both for evening meals and Sunday lunches. There is a consistently good menu (I can recommend the Calves liver), with a good choice of fresh local produce. Sunday lunches are the standard roast with all the trimmings, good food, good value and no washing up! It can be a little difficult to find, but the views across the Weald in summer and cosy fires in the winter, along with a good meal, make the journey worthwhile. Jane H.R. Feb 7th 2000Greetings fellow food-philes... We visited the Old Black Horse Inn, Market Bosworth, Warwickshire. It was a wonderful dining experience. Intimate yet casual, the food and service was divine. Give it a try... the town is beautiful and quiet and the pub is delightful. Cheers from Andra in Boston, Mass - Jan 2000
North Norfolk
After reading about your trips to North Norfolk, I thought you should know about the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe. From the outside it is probably still the ugliest pub on the coast! But on entering, it's like a Tardis, transporting you with its stunning views over the marshes. There's even a grass roof over the newly constructed sunken bedroomsThe 40-50 seat resturant serves only fresh food and the menu is changed daily. The mussels come from the shore which is only about 30 yards from the bottom of the garden.
There must be about 40 wines on the list with very few wines costing more than 20.00 To get a table at the weekends you need to book 3/4 days ahead, but in the summer allow at least a week. Why not try it while the place is still undiscovered!

As a veggie, [tough luck! - Ed]I am constantly on the lookout for good veggie restaurants. I tried MEANING
GREEN on London Wall the other day and was really impressed. It is a real change
from the earthy establishments that seem to dominate the veggie scene as it is very
fresh and modern looking. The food is well above the average as well and I can
particularly recommend the asparagus and snow pea crepe and the vegetable and
dolcelatte tart tatin. Good wines, great atmosphere and not to pricey either. Starters £5ish, mains £9. My carnivorous companion enjoyed it just as much as I did as well, which is always a good sign!

>>Have you heard about HOOKED the fish restaurant in DARTMOUTH (Devon)? - it's good! >No! Tell us more - Do you have an address and tel no and can you mention a couple of typical dishes and prices? Reply: They are closed all day Sunday & Monday lunchtime. Prices are difficult as they are determined by the fish market prices on the day. However, the average for a three course dinner would seem to be about £33/head and that includes wine! Most importantly, the menu changes everyday so you know it's fresh and they use local seafood & produce through the seasons. Everything is made on the premises from the selection of fresh warm breads & Marinated olives when you arrive, through to the desserts, ice-creams, sorbets & petit fours. We had Crab & Lobster Cappucino with Smoked Paprika to start, followed by Fruits de Mer for two which, apart from looking stunning, tasted wonderful. Our friend's starter dish of Langoustine & Monkfish Ravioli with Herb CousCous & Shellfish & Basil Emulsion was superb and was followed by Seabass with Rustic Mash, Baby Fennel & Antiboise Sauce. Only one of us managed dessert which was the Apple Cider & Cinnamon Soup with Braeburn apple fritter while the other two shared a domed platter of assorted local West Country Cheeses. Sadly they are shut for their annual holidays until 10th Feb 2000 having just won two AA Rosettes in their first 6 months. The building, dated 1365 is stunning and the informality & friendliness of the staff is quite refreshing when the standards are so high. Hooked the fish restaurant is at: 5 Higher Street Dartmouth Devon TQ6 9RB Tel; 01803-832022

If you have visited any of the restaurants mentioned in our pages, please send your comments to: Dine-Online but we don't make reservations for you!! Don't forget to include the address, and if possible, the telephone number. It would be really helpful to other readers if you could indicate what dishes you liked or disliked plus a guide to the price range.
