the UK Dining Guide
Reader's THUMBS UP!
Recently dined at The Recorders House, Thaxted, Essex.
Recommendations and emails, April - June 2000
Definitely worth a visit - the food was superb, the staff were very friendly and courteous without being intrusive, the wine list was obviously selected by someone who totally loves and knows wine and the actual building is amazing with lots of local and royal history.
I also had the pleasure of staying overnight in one of their two ensuite bedrooms. These are very reasonably priced and the decor and facilities are wonderful.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a special evening out or weekend away.

Lunched with 5 friends - cooked food fine - BUT
- the worst cheese board ever in what purports to be a class restaurant!

Seven, 1 Leicester Square, WC2; tel 020 7909 1177
I thought I would let you know my thoughts on Seven as I visited it on Saturday with a party of friends. The food was outstanding as was the view so there were no disappointments there!
However, they were quite clearly understaffed and the waiter, who didn't speak English particularly well, was darting around like a headless chicken meaning there was no real service to speak of. The downside was that we were waiting for drinks for over 45 minutes and when we finally got ONE of the bottles of wine we had ordered, it hadn't even been opened! I gave the continually hovering haughty Maitre d (you weren't joking!) a real going over as his attitude towards my enquiry into where our drinks were was met with disdain and abruptness. He did, however, end up giving us our coffee for free and he made a point of stopping me as we left to apologise and it actually seemed sincere.
I would go there again as I am hoping it was just one of "those" nights for them.

Izzy's Ruchita, Unit 1b, Guildway, Town Square, South Woodham Ferrers, Essex; tel 01245 321306 / 329961 - www.ruchita.co.uk
We have regularly visited Ruchita in South Woodham Ferrers for years and Izzy (the owner) is the man. The food is gorgeous and the hospitality is great, even if it's late at night. They never rush you and make you feel welcome! We love Izzy's Ruchita!

Mirabelle, 56 Curzon Street, W1; tel 020 7589 5080
Would just like to say myself and my wife recently enjoyed a lavish meal at 'The Mirabelle' in Mayfair. The reputation this place has got with Marco's great name dignifies what eating is all about.
The starter of salmon ballontine with caviar was a great warm-up and the roast rump of lamb was perfect in flavour, texture and marriage of essence in quality and style. The lemon tart was a classic way to finish - smooth and pure.
I am a chef - need more info, contact me. I hope this helps.

Nico's acropolistaverna, 396 Footscray Road, New Eltham, London, SE9 3TU - www.acropolistaverna.co.uk
I simply must recommend this Greek restaurant. The food is really good and the staff very friendly. They have large premises built and decorated in traditional Greek design, which adds to the atmosphere. It really is like being in Greece. It has a very good local reputation and well worth visiting. Very highly recommended.

The Best Meal EVER!
We are wine importers/brokers/agents in the USA and travel to Europe four times a year. Our dining experience May 17, 2000 was the best meal. Two weeks later we are still chatting about the meal and service.

Govindas, 9/10 Soho Street, London, W1 - www.iskcon.org.uk/london/govindas.htm
I have found a wonderful restaurant within central London, which I regularly visit at lunchtimes. It is a place where I can eat with no worries because I know it is purely vegetarian, purely alcohol and smoke free. The food is out of this world and the atmosphere friendly but informal, with an Indian flavour.

I have looked at your website and have found it very useful. I would however suggest that you review this restaurant when you are next in the area.
We have always found the food, service and presentation excellent and also good value, that cannot be said of many restaurants today.
